A location manager finds, secures and manages the places where a film, web series, advertisement or music video is shot. They check whether a site suits the script, arrange permission from owners and authorities, and make sure the crew can reach, work in and leave the site safely.

Film, web series and ad shoots take place across cities, towns and villages in India, and OTT platforms have increased the number of series shot on location. Location managers work behind the camera, usually in the production team, with the director, production designer, assistant directors and line producer. Their work decides whether a shoot runs smoothly or loses hours to a blocked road, a missing permit or an angry property owner.

There is no single entrance exam for this career. Most people start with a degree in film, media or mass communication, or simply by joining a production team as a runner or assistant and learning on sets. The hours are long and irregular on shoot days, and the work depends on contacts and reliability, so it suits people who are organised, calm under pressure and comfortable with travel.

What Does a Location Manager Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Read the script and the director's brief to understand what kind of place each scene needs, such as a village lane, a hospital, a colonial bungalow or a crowded market.

  • Scout and photograph possible locations, then shortlist them with notes on access, power, parking, light and noise.

  • Negotiate with property owners and agree location fees, shooting hours, damage terms and agreements in writing.

  • Obtain shooting permissions from local municipal bodies, police, forest or heritage authorities, and property trusts, and keep track of when each permit is valid.

  • Plan the logistics for each shoot day, including parking for vans and equipment, generators, toilets, catering areas, traffic control and crowd management.

  • Manage the site during the shoot, handle neighbours and local people, and keep the crew safe and within the agreed hours and boundaries.

  • Oversee the wrap, making sure the location is cleaned and restored to the condition agreed with the owner and that no damage or pending dues are left behind.

Where They Work

Location managers work mainly with feature film production houses in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities with active film industries, as well as regional film industries across the country. Many also work on Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and other regional films.

Demand also comes from OTT platforms and the production companies that make their series, from television serial houses, from advertising agencies and brand film production companies, and from location and production service agencies that supply sites and logistics to other productions. Many location managers work freelance or on contract for each project, and some move into full-time roles at production companies over time.

How to Become a Location Manager in India?

After Class 12

Any stream is acceptable. Students who know they want to work in film should take English and build a habit of watching films and series closely, noting how places are used on screen. Courses in film, media or mass communication are a useful next step.

Undergraduate

Complete a bachelor's degree in film studies, mass communication, media or a related field. Many people enter the industry from other degrees such as arts, commerce or architecture, but a film or media degree makes the first months in production easier.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

A postgraduate diploma or master's in film production or film studies can help, especially for those who want to move into production management. It is not essential for most entry-level roles.

Gain Experience on Sets

Join a production team as a runner, production assistant or location assistant, on a film, web series, ad or music video. Learn how permissions, budgets and shoot-day logistics work, and build a network of owners, authorities and crew.

Licence / Certification

No licence is compulsory to work as a location manager. Courses in production management, location scouting or film permissions can strengthen a CV, but employers in India mostly look at the shoots you have worked on.

First Job

Start as a location assistant or location scout, take on small shoots, and move up to location manager as you show that you can manage permissions, budgets and crew on your own.

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • No specific stream is required at Class 12. Arts, commerce and science students can all enter the field, though students who take English, Hindi or a regional language, and who have some interest in geography, economics or sociology, often find the work easier to understand.

  • For degree courses in film or mass communication, most colleges ask for a Class 12 pass in any stream. Some institutes also hold their own entrance tests or interviews, so check each college's admission rules.

  • Typical minimum marks depend on the college and are not fixed for this career. Check the admission criteria of each institute before applying.

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass from a recognised board for entry-level work such as location assistant or production runner.

  • A bachelor's degree in film, media, mass communication or a related field is usually preferred for location manager roles, along with hands-on experience on shoots.

Scope and Future of Location Manager in India

Demand for location managers follows the volume of film, web series and advertising production. OTT platforms have increased the number of series made in India, and many of them are shot on real locations in several states, which keeps experienced location people in demand. Regional film industries add further work, as do brand films and music videos that often move across cities in a single shoot.

Growth areas include multi-city web series, shoots in heritage towns and rural areas, and productions that want unusual or natural settings. Many states now have film policies and single-window facilities to help shoots get permissions faster, which can make the location manager's job more predictable, though the rules differ from state to state and change over time, so they should be checked before each project.

International work is possible for experienced location managers. Foreign productions shoot in India, and Indian location managers with strong permission and logistics skills can also work on international shoots or move into location roles abroad, though this usually needs years of experience, a strong portfolio of shoots and a good network.

Location Manager: Frequently Asked Questions

Is location manager a good career in India?

It can be, especially for people who enjoy travel, problem-solving and working with people. Demand depends on film, web series and advertising output, which varies. Pay starts modest and grows with experience and a strong record of successful shoots. Freelance work is common, so income can be uneven in the early years, and the hours are long on shoot days.

What degree do I need to become a location manager?

No single degree is compulsory. A bachelor's degree in film studies, mass communication or media is the most common route and is usually preferred by employers. Degrees in arts, commerce or architecture also work well if you gain experience on film or ad sets. Practical experience on shoots matters more than the degree for most location manager roles.

Can I become a location manager without a film degree?

Yes. Many location managers start as runners or assistants on a production and learn permissions, logistics and site management on the job. Building contacts with production houses, joining small shoots and keeping a record of the work you have done are the most useful steps when you do not have a film degree.

How much does a location manager earn in India?

Pay varies widely by experience, project size and whether the work is freelance or full-time. Entry-level roles are typically around ₹2 - ₹4 Lakh a year, mid-level roles are around ₹4 - ₹8 Lakh, and senior roles can go higher. Freelance day rates and project fees can differ from these figures, so treat them as a rough guide.

Is location manager a permanent job or freelance work?

Both are possible. Many location managers work on a project basis for film, web series or ad productions and move between projects. Some join production houses, OTT production companies or location services agencies on a full-time basis. Freelance work gives variety and flexibility, but it also means periods between projects with no pay.

What is the difference between a location manager and a location scout?

A location scout searches for and shortlists possible sites, often photographing them and noting access and conditions. A location manager takes the chosen sites forward, securing permissions and agreements, planning shoot-day logistics, managing the site during filming and overseeing the wrap. Many people begin as scouts and move into the manager role with experience.

Do I need to speak Hindi or a regional language for this job?

Hindi helps in most parts of India, and English is used for most production paperwork and contracts. Speaking the local language of the place you are shooting in makes it much easier to deal with property owners, neighbours and local officials. Many location managers learn enough of two or three languages to handle daily conversations and build trust on site.

Are there job opportunities for location managers abroad?

There can be, mainly on international productions and in countries with large film and series industries. Foreign productions that shoot in India also need local location managers. Working abroad usually requires several years of experience, a portfolio of completed shoots and knowledge of the local permit process, so most people build that record in India first.
